Synopsis

A la fin du dix neuvième siècle, le pasteur de Marlott révèle à John Durbeyfield, détaillant de produits fermiers, que son nom est une déformation de D'Urberville. John décide d'envoyer sa fille Tess au manoir de Trantrige où vit cette famille pour réclamer un emploi en arguant de ce lien de parenté. Séduite par Alec D'Urberville, Tess est bientôt enceinte, mais son enfant ne survit pas.
